One-Act Play (example)

 Premise Line:

             Ash is only child of her parents , they lived in island called Malibu , but her parents died because of the accident. Ash grew up with her cousin Krizelle and her aunt Veronica. Ash life become miserable since her childhood because her cousin and her aunt treating her like she was a maid. But in the end she met a man named Chris whose gonna change her life.

           Ash - The girl suffered from her own relatives by not treating her well.( Protagonist)

           Chris - The guy who help Ash and he is Ash lover( Static)

           Aunt Veronica - The girl who didn't treat Ash right. ( Antagonist)

           Krizelle- She has the same attitude with her mom. ( Aunt Veronica 's daughter) ( Dynamic)

 

 

 

Scene 1: At Aunt Veronica's House

 

Ash: ( I was cleaning in the kitchen when aunt Veronica called me maybe she will order something again . I quickly go to her because she will gonna scold me again if i couldn't go to her.) (Center Stage)

 

Aunt Veronica: Ash!! Come here!!

 

Ash: Why aunt? Is there any problem?

 

Aunt Veronica: I want you to make some coffee for me. Go make some coffee and make it faster!!

 

Ash: Yes aunt , I will make you a coffee.

 

Ash: ( When i was making some coffee for my aunt, i heard a loud scream upstairs. Maybe it was just my cousin. When i finish making coffeee i quickly go to my aunt and gave the coffee and that's when i saw my cousin running downstairs while she was smiling .)

 

Krizelle : Mom!! I have a good news. ( Upstage center)

 

Aunt Veronica : What is it my daughter?

 

Krizelle: Chris is going here in Malibu . I think he was gonna live here from now on !! And i think he will be here tomorrow.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Aunt Veronica: Where did you get that news?

 

Krizelle: I saw it on his post on facebook!!

 

Aunt Veronica: That's a great news!!

 

Krizelle : Oh Ash why are you standing there go clean the house ( Looking at Ash with a disgusting face)

 

Aunt Veronica: Yeah, Ash clean the house immediately. Clean all the surfaces, i will check it after you clean. If i saw a dust even if it is a small garbage or dirt i will punish you did you get it?

 

Ash : Yes aunt . And don't worry i' m gonna clean it very well.

 

Ash : ( After aunt say that im gonna clean the house i immediately obey her because i don't want to get punish like before. After i clean the entire house , i check the time and i was shocked because it's already five o 'clock in the afternoon.)

 

Ash : Oh my god!! It's already five o 'clock in the afternoon noon.( Shocked)

 

Aunt Veronica: Ash why aren't you cooking yet , its five o'clock in the afternoon already.

 

Ash: I - i'm sorry aunt i didn't notice the time because i was cleaning the house. ( Nervous tone)

 

Aunt Veronica: I don't care . Just cook something for us to eat for dinner.

 

Ash: Yes aunt. ( Stage Right)

 

Ash: ( When aunt say that , i search in the kitchen that something i will cook for our dinner. When i found something to cook i began to cook. And after i finish cooking, i called them to eat.)

 

Ash : Aunt Veronica , Krizelle the food is ready let's eat!!

 

Ash : ( When i called them we start to eat . While were eating, Krizelle was endlessly talking about what she saw in Chris's post .)

 

Krizelle: Mom , oh my gosh i can't believe that Chris change a lot he became more handsome. And besides he also got more richer.

 

Krizelle: I bet you're jealous Ash because i have a boyfriend who is handsome and rich. How about you ? You can't even go outside of this house . ( Evil laugh)

 

Aunt Veronica: Stop that argue were in front of food.( Serious tone)

 

Ash : ( I didn't listen to Krizelle 's stories and i didn't care on what she say to me earlier. Besides i didn't know that Chris either. But im wondering why and how Krizelle knew him or maybe he was from here before . I just stopped what i was thinking and continued eating. After we eat i go to the kitchen and start cleaning all the mess there. After cleaning i immediately went to my room to rest and clean my body . After that i slammed my body to my bed.)

 

Ash: Arggghhh!!! What a tiring day . I think i should sleep it's already past seven o' clock.

 

Ash : ( I woke up because of a loud scream. My body awaked because that is my aunt calling my name , i immediately go downstairs and the first thing i saw was my aunt who is pissed and angry.) ( Upstage left)

 

 

 

Aunt Veronica: How many times i called you , look it's already late and you're still on your bed ! Didn't i tell you to woke up early to do your work here!

 

Ash: I'm sorry aunt , i was just tired yesterday that's why i woke up late. And don't worry i will do my work.

 

Aunt Veronica: What are you looking at and why you're standing here ? Go and do your work!

 

Ash: Yes aunt.

 

Ash: ( When i was walking away i heard  a footsteps from upstairs maybe my cousin is awake . I heard that Krizelle my cousin will going out and based on her voice she feel so excited, i wondered where she was going . But i don't care either.)

 

Ash: ( Heavy sigh) I wish i could go outside and spend my time out there like my cousin Krizelle.

 

Ash : ( An idea pop up on my mind that makes me smile.)

 

Aunt Veronica: Why are you smiling?

 

Ash: Nothing aunt.

 

Aunt Veronica: Nothing, nothing, what a psycho smiling alone.

 

Ash: ( Aunt Veronica walked away while saying those words while me , just making a funny face while copying her. And that's the reason why i smile more.)

 

Aunt Veronica: Ash!! Can you come here for a second!

 

Ash: Why aunt , is there any problem, what can i help you?

 

Aunt Veronica: Can you make me some coffee and hand me that newspaper. And also don't forget to clean our yard.

 

Ash: Oh.... Okay aunt i will do it all right away.

 

Ash: ( I finished the coffee that i'm making for my aunt and i give it to her . After that i go to the yard and clean it as fast as I can.)

 

Aunt Veronica: You finish your all work?

 

Ash: Yes aunt. And by the way aunt. I have something to tell you .  

 

Aunt Veronica: What is it?

 

Ash : Uhmmmm.....

 

 

 

 

 

Aunt Veronica: Can you please say it now? I'm going somewhere so make it faster!

 

 

Ash : Uhmmmm... Aunt can i go outside too?

 

 

Aunt Veronica: Where are you going then?

 

 

Ash: Somewhere i guess. And oh... I almost forgot to tell you that i'm also going to the beach, it is ten minutes walk from here to beach.

 

 

Aunt Veronica: Where did you hear about that beach thing huh?

 

Ash: I heard it in Krizelle when she was always telling a story to you . I heard that its beautiful there.

 

Aunt Veronica: Oh ... Okay you can go . But you will come home early, if i come here and i didn't see you, you know what i'm going to do to you did you get it?

 

Ash : Yes aunt i get it . And also thank you.

 

Ash : ( When aunt agree i'm super happy because that was the first time she allow me to explore and to have fun .)

 

 

Ash: I'm so excited to go outside. I will enjoy this day.

 

 

Scene 2 : At the beach

 

 

Ash: ( When i reached the place I can't hide my smile when i'm finally get there. I hear the peaceful sound of sea water and i can feel cold breeze of the wind . I finally decided to go for walk and  enjoy the peaceful place. As i keep walking, i bumped into someone.) ( Downstage right)

 

 

Ash: Ouch!!!

 

 

Chris: Oh... I'm sorry miss?

 

 

Ash : Ash, my name is Ash, and how about you what's your name it seems like you're busy on your cellphone

 

 

Chris:  Oh ... ( Chuckle) By the way my name is Chris . I think you're new to this place right? Oh... I mean here in the beach right?

 

Ash: Oh ... Yeah it's my first time here in the beach. And by the way your name is familiar to.

 

Chris: You do? Where or whom you know my name ?

 

Ash: It's from my cousin Krizelle i heard your name from her .

 

Chris: Is that so ?

 

Ash : Yeah ... ( Chuckle) And by the way how about you are new here or you have been here before?

 

Chris: Actually i lived here before here in Malibu so that's why i know this place how about you did you lived here in Malibu or you're a tourist?

 

Ash: I lived here also , i'm not a tourist ( Giggles)

 

Chris: But i think this is the first time i see you here because the people that lived here in Malibu always visit this place so why you're first time to visit here even though you lived here?

 

Ash: Uhmmm... It's my first time here because my aunt don't allow me to go outside she's so very strict when it comes to me , so that's why its my first time here besides i will enjoy this moment.

 

Chris: Why you're aunt is so strict do you have any parents?

 

Ash: No, i don't have one, they're gone when i was just a little, i grew up with my aunt and my cousin.

 

Chris: Oh.... I'm sorry to hear that but- ... ( I didn't finish what i was going to say when i looked at Ash i see her eyes that have a tears on it and it keeps on falling l. I feel sad for Ash situation. I asked Ash if she's okay.)

 

Chris: Ash are you okay why are you crying?

 

Ash: I'm okay i just missed my parents.

 

Chris: Good to hear that you're okay , don't cry it makes you ugly. ( Giggles)

 

Chris: Can you smile now i want to see you smile. ( When Ash smiled my heart skipped to a beat , and also i feel something in my stomach. I came back to myself when i heard someone shouting my name , and it was Ash and she said something to me.)

 

Ash: I've been talking to you for a while and i' ve been calling you but you're not saying anything. I also noticed that you were just staring at me , what's wrong?

 

 

 

Chris: Nothing. But i have a question.

 

Ash: What is it?

 

Chris: Do you eat breakfast?

 

Ash: Oh... I almost forgot i don't eat breakfast.

 

Chris: ( Giggles) I see that you haven't eaten yet because i heard that your stomach is grumbling.

 

Ash: You heard it , i thought you didn't heard it . Oh my god that was so embarrassing.

 

Chris: Don't be embarrassed besides i'm also haven't eaten yet . So you can join me to eat breakfast.

 

Ash : Oh sorry but i don't have money to buy foods.

 

Chris: Don't worry about that it's my treat either.

 

Ash: Are you serious you're treating me food?

 

Chris: Yes, fo you think i'm joking?

 

Ash: It's not what i meant, it's just you're the first person to asked me and treat me.

 

Chris: Oh... Is that so, then thank you for accepting.

 

Ash: I'm the one whose gonna say thank you , but also you're welcome.

 

Chris: So can we go to the near store to buy foods?

 

Ash: Yes , so let's go.

 

 

Scene 3 : At the store

 

Chris: ( While were walking i secretly took a photo of Ash. She's so cute while walking , after some minutes we already here at the store. I asked Ash what food she wants?)

 

Chris: Ash what food do you want to buy?

 

Ash: Uhmm... This two pieces of bread and one bottle of water.

 

Chris: Do you want to buy more?

 

Ash: No, thanks i'm good with it.

 

Chris: Okay, if that's what you want , but you said earlier that you haven't eaten your breakfast.

 

Ash: Yes, but i'm good what i buy.

 

Chris: Oh... Okay if you say so.

 

Chris:( I gave the food that we buy to the cashier. And after that i gave the food that Ash asked earlier.)

 

 

Ash : Thank you Chris ( Smile)

 

Chris: You're welcome. ( When Ash say thank you, i was shocked because she said my name and she smiled at me. I also asked myself if i'm falling in loved with her. Am i really falling for her? I think this is what they called love at first sight.)

 

Chris: So how's your life with your aunt?

 

Ash: About that , that's a long story.

 

Chris: (When she say those words i feel like something was bothering her.)

 

Ash : It's not that i don't want to share my life, but i don't want to talk about it, I'm not used to sharing my life and my problem to others, it is because i'm used to keeping it to myself. How about you?

 

Chris: Me? Uhmmm... Actually i'm the only son of the mayor here in Malibu so that's why i know this place very well. And also i'm the famous business man.

 

Ash: Can i asked you if you have a girlfriend?

 

Chris: Me? (Chuckle) No, i don't have one.

 

Ash: What!!! ( Shocked) So all this time my cousin was lying to her mom .

 

Chris: Why did you say that , i don't get it , what are saying?

 

Ash: I will tell it to you. My said that you're his boyfriend, she always tells us that you're her boyfriend but now i know that she was lying to her mom.

 

Chris: ( Laugh)  I think you're cousin is just hallucinating.

 

Ash: But i was shocked to know that you're life was like that.

 

Chris: Yeah... But also it's so hard when your life is like mine a lot of works to do that's why it is so stressing.

 

Ash: I bet it is ( Chuckle)

 

Ash: ( While me and Chris is having fun talking to each other a familiar girl caught my eye i was shocked when it was Krizelle my cousin she is with her friends i think she was going home , but the last thing i knew is she saw us , she saw me and Chris was happily talking. And then i realized the time i was shocked to see what time is it. Its already ten o'clock in the morning. I quickly change my conversation with Chris.)

 

 

Ash: Uhmmm... Chris sadly to say that i need to go home before my aunt get angry at me.

 

 

Chris: Why do sudden?

 

Ash: Because my aunt will get mad at me.

 

 

Chris: If that's so okay. But wait here's my calling card you can also search may account there and also my number is in that card too.

 

 

 

Ash: Uhmm.. Okay thank you for this time.

 

 

Chris: You're welcome.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Scene 4 : Going home

 

Chris: ( Ash didn't know i followed her . I am not being a stalker , but i want her to go home safely. When she arrived at her house, i came closer and i hide to the tree. I heard that her aunt was speaking bad words towards to her, while her cousin was happy about what was happening to Ash.)

 

Aunt Veronica: I told you to come home early.

 

Ash : Yes aunt you said that to me.

 

Aunt Veronica: Then why you come home late before i comeback here.

 

Ash: I just enjoy my time outside because its also my first time there.

 

Krizelle: Enjoy your face i saw with Chris your talking to him happily. Now i know the reason why you want to go outside because you want to meet Chris are going to stole him from me . I bet it is because he so handsome and rich that's why you're jealous and you want to stole him. ( Chuckle)

 

Aunt Veronica: Is that true Ash that you want to stole my daughter's boyfriend?

 

Ash: It's not like that i will explain to that your daughter was lying to you all the time.

 

Krizelle: How can you say that ? Do you have any proof?

 

Ash: Yes i have because Chris told me that he doesn't have a girlfriend. And he also said that you just hallucinating. ( Chuckle)

 

Chris: ( At this time i see that Ash and her cousin was arguing and then Ash aunt slap ger because of what she said to her cousin. I felt sorry for Ash because she's suffering a lot and even her own relatives treating her like that. That's why i decided to help her but before i go to their house i immediately called my dad to bring some police here in Ash' s place. And after that call i go to Ash's house. I quickly knocked on the door and it open revealing Ash cousin i think this is Krizelle.)

 

Krizelle: C- Chris ( Nervous tone) What are you doing here?

 

Chris: Where's Ash?

 

Krizelle: Ash? Uhmm.. ( I didn't finish what i am going to say when Chris runs immediately making me fall down on the floor i can see that he's helping Ash.)

 

Aunt Veronica: C-Chris what are you doing here?

 

Chris : Oh i bet you're Ash aunt right i think this is your last day here in your house.( Chuckle)

Aunt Veronica: What are you--

 

Chris: ( Before she finish what is she going to say the police came. I was happy that they will be in jail and Ash will be free from thier bad doings towards to her.)

 

Ash: Thank you for your help Chris i owe you a lot.( Smile)

 

Chris: You're always welcome ( Smile)

 

Aunt Veronica: You're two gonna pay for this!!! ( Angry tone)

 

Krizelle: I don't want to go to jail. Please Ash forgive me to what i did to you on our past . Please forgive me.

 

Ash: I will forgive you but it doesn't mean you couldn't put into the jail.

 

Ash: ( The police get them and leave . My tears began to fall down and then Chris notice it and then he hugged me.)

 

Chris: Don't worry Ash i will help you and besides i will build my business here in Malibu and i want you to work with me . Are you agree with my idea?

 

Ash: Yes i will accept it.

 

Ash: ( And that my love to Chris start , but now we have a big business to handle.)

Scene 1: At the Beach(center stage)

 

(The sound of waves crashing against the shore. The sun is beginning to set, casting a warm glow over the scene. Aldrin and Rachelle sit on the sand, facing the horizon.)

 

 

Aldrin: There's something magical about the sunset, isn't it?

 

 

(take a good look at the changing colors of the sky)

 

 

Rachelle: Yeah, it's like nature's way of saying, "Hey, look at me, I'm beautiful!"

 

 

Aldrin: It's a reminder that even in the chaos of life, there's still beauty to be found.

 

 

Rachelle: You always have a way with words, Aldrin. It's like you see the world differently.

 

Aldrin: Maybe I do. I think there's more to life than what meets the eye. Sometimes, we just have to pause and appreciate the little things.

 

 

(As they speak, Angelo approaches, his presence interrupting the peacefulness)

 

 

Angelo:  Hey, Aldrin! What's so enchanting about a silly sunset?

Angelo:Appreciated? Ha! I appreciate winning, not some pretty colors in the sky.

 

 

(Walther nervously joins Aldrin and Rachelle, drawn by their conversation.)

Rachelle:  I like that. Goodbye for the day, but also a promise of a new beginning tomorrow.

 

 

Joanna:Mind if I join your little group?

 

 

Rachelle:  The more, the merrier! Welcome, Rachelle. We were just talking about sunsets.(excitedly)

 

 

Joanna: Ah, sunsets. They hold so many untold stories within them. Mind if I listen in?

 

 

Aldrin, Rachelle Walther, and Angelo exchange curious glances before inviting Joanna to join them.

 

Scene 2: Inside the cottage( stage right)

 

(After that,The group gathers closer together, forming a circle on the sand. The sun continues its descent, casting a warm and golden light.)

 

Aldrin:  So, Joanna do you have any favorite memories or experiences related to sunsets?

 

Joanna: Oh, many. Sunsets have a way of revealing hidden emotions, don't they? I remember one particular evening when I watched the sun disappear behind the mountains. It felt like a farewell to something I couldn't quite grasp.

 

Rachelle:What do you mean, Joanna?

 

 

Joanna:  To a chapter of my life, I suppose. It was a moment of realization that sometimes, we have to let go of what no longer serves us.(mysteriously)

 

Angelo: Seriously, joanna? Sunsets and farewells? It's just a bunch of colors fading away.

 

 

Aldrin: By the way,Angelo, but there's beauty in those colors. And sometimes, in the quiet moments, we find meaning beyond what our eyes can see.

Scene 3:inside the beach( downstage right)

 

 

(Leaving a serene, dusky atmosphere. The group remains seated on the sand, contemplating the fading light.)

 

Rachelle:You know, despite the rivalry, I think moments like these bring us closer together.

 

 

Aldrin: Absolutely. Our differences fade away when we witness the beauty of nature. It reminds us of our shared humanity.

 

 

Joanna:Nature has a way of humbling us, doesn't it? It reminds us that we are just a small part of a much larger world. (thoughtfully)

 

 

(Aldrin notices Angelo's restlessness and decides to address the tension.)

 

Aldrin: Angelo, why do you always feel the need to prove yourself? We're all here enjoying the same sunset. There's no need for rivalry.

 

Angelo: Look, Aldrin, I've always been competitive. It's just who I am. I want to be the best at everything I do.(defensively)

(After a few minutes later,the sky is now bathed in twilight hues, with stars starting to twinkle above. The group sits closer together, enjoying the peaceful ambiance.)

 

 

Walther: It's amazing how the night sky can make you feel so small yet connected to something greater.

 

Joanna:The stars hold countless untold stories, just like each one of us. Secrets hidden in plain sight.

 

Rachelle: Joanna, you always seem to have a touch of mystery about you. Care to share any secrets?

 

 

Joanna: Secrets, you say? Well, let me tell you a tale. There's more to me than meets the eye. I have a knack for finding hidden treasures and unlocking the mysteries of the world.

 

 

Aldrin:  Hidden treasures? Like literal treasures?(curious)

 

Joanna:  Oh, not just material treasures, Aldrin. I seek out the treasures of knowledge and the thrill of unraveling a mystery that lie within ancient texts and forgotten places.

 

 

Angelo: Are you some sort of modern-day Filipina Jones or something?

 

Joanna: You could say that. But my adventures take me to the depths of libraries and forgotten corners of the world.

 

 

Walther: That sounds incredible, Joanna. How did you discover this passion for uncovering mysteries?

 

Joanna:  It's a long story, Walther. But let's just say that life has its way of guiding us toward our true passions. Sometimes, we stumble upon them when we least expect it.

 

Rachelle: Joanna, Do you have any tales of your adventures to share?

Scene 5: Happily moments inside sa beach (downstage left)

 

 

( They huddle closer together, their faces illuminated by the soft moonlight.)

 

Aldrin:You know, there's something about the night that brings out our vulnerabilities. It's like the darkness gives us the courage to reveal parts of ourselves we normally keep hidden.

 

 

Rachelle:You're right, Aldrin. In the quiet of the night, we can let our guards down and share our true thoughts and feelings

 

Walther: I've always struggled with opening up. But being here with all of you, surrounded by the beauty of the night, makes it easier.(softly)

 

Angelo:Same here, Walther. I've always felt the need to put on a tough exterior, but tonight, I want to be real with all of you.

 

Joanna:Vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness. It takes courage to show our true selves to others.

Joy and Rose are both sick and accidentally meet at the hospital. Joy is a very jolly patient that has a Cyanotic Congenital Heart Disease. Rose is a hopeless and lonely patient that has a Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia. In just a short period of time, they have created a connection with each other. Joy found out the life that Rose has. She became empathic and feel sad for her. She wanted to help her as much as she can. Then Joy had a heart attack. She didn’t survive that makes Rose very sad. Rose discovered what life Joy had. She almost wanted to give up but she remembered the things that Joy had told her. So, she continued fighting her illness. At the end, she recovered and became thankful and positive in her life.

Title: Two Minus One

Setting: Hospital

Joy – a jolly patient with heart disease (protagonist, round)

The LIGHT come up on Joy quickly closing the door. (center stage)

SHE is panting heavily while laughing.

Joy: She still can’t catch me. I’m really a fast runner.

Another LIGHT come up on Herayah.

Rose: (surprised) Who are you? What are you doing here?

Joy: (gasps) I’m sorry. It’s not my intention to enter in your room without permission. It was an accident. 

Joy opens the door and ready to leave.

Rose stops her.

Rose: Wait! Are you okay? You are pale.

Joy: (laughs) You shouldn’t ask me like that because we’re both pale.

Rose: (smiles bitterly) Yeah, you’re right.

Yna enters the center stage from upstage center.

The whole set LIGHT UP.

Yna: Joy, I’ve been looking for you everywhere! You made me worry. 

Joy: (laughs) Yaya, you run like a turtle that you can’t catch up with me.

Yna: Oh my God Joy, you will kill me with worriedness not with tiredness. Let’s go.

Scene 2

(Hospital Cafeteria)

The LIGHTS come up on Joy and Yna that are eating on the table. (downstage right)

The other patients are eating on the other table at their back including Rose who is eating alone. (center stage)

Joy: Yaya, look at that pale girl.

Yna: Wow, you’re saying that as if you’re not pale too.

Joy: (laughs) You have a point. Anyway, I want to befriend with her.

Yna: Joy, I already heard that many times from you. I already know what you’re doing. You’ll say that to me then I will allow you and you will run away from me again. Making friends for you is just an excuse to escape from me.

Joy: Huh, did I do that? Please yaya, allow me to be friends with her. I’ll not escape anymore, I promise.

Yna; That’s your 6th promise this month.

Joy: (annoyed) I’m telling the truth now. 

Yna: No, you’re not. You’ll run again. You know that it is not good for you.

Joy: Yaya, running is good for my health. According to my research, runners have lower chance of dying from a heart disease.

Yna: You’re not a runner and your case is different from them.

Joy: Yes, I am not a runner. Yes, my case is different from them. But still I don’t want to die because of heart disease. I want to die because of oldness not sickness.

Yna: I know. I also don’t want you to die because of that.

Joy: So, you’re allowing me to befriend with her?! Thank you Yaya!

Yna: Ye- What?! No! Joy!

Joy immediately stand up and run towards Rose’s table.

Yna: Joy, stop! Don’t run!

Scene 3

The LIGHTS come up on Joy and Rose’s table. (downstage center)

Joy: Hi!

Rose: Hello.

Joy: I’m Joy, what’s your name?

Rose: I’m Rose.

Joy: Why are you eating alone? Where’s your yaya?

Rose: (stops eating and remains quiet while looking at Joy)

Joy: Your friends?

Rose: (still looking at Joy quietly)

Joy: (feeling awkward) Uhm.. Your visitors? Like your sister or your mother?

Rose: (still looking at Joy quietly)

Joy stops talking.

Rose: They’re not here. They are working.

Joy: Ah. (nods) I’m sorry.

Rose: Why are you sorry? They are not dead yet so don’t feel sorry when they are mentioned.

Joy: (laughs) Oh my.. No! I didn’t say sorry because of that. I said sorry because your sad eyes became sadder when I mentioned them. 

Rose: (looks down) Yeah, I always feel sad whenever I’m talking about them.

Joy: May I ask why?

Rose: Because they are suffering because of me.

Joy: Why do you say so?

Rose: Because instead of living their lives, they are busy on earning money so that they can save me.

Joy: Don’t blame yourself, okay? You didn’t choose to suffer like this either. None of us choose to suffer like this. 

Yna enters the scene.

Yna: Joy, we have to go. You have to take your medicines and you should take a rest.

Joy: But it is just 7 in the morning.

Yna: Yes, that’s your everyday time for your medicines and rest, right?

Rose: You should go.

Joy: I’m sorry, I have to go. I enjoyed talking to you. It’s nice to meet you Rose. See you later!

Scene 4

Joy and Yna are slowly walking towards Joy’s patient’s room. (stage right)

Yna: What happened? What’s her name? What did you talk about? Are you friends now? Are you happy? Do you feel okay now? Or did you ask her to be your accomplice when you escape?

Joy: (laughs) Yaya, you have so many questions. Her name is Rose. And to answer your last question, no, I didn’t ask her to be my accomplice. 

Yna: That’s good to know. So, what happened?

Joy: We just talked about things.

Yna: What do you mean by “things”?

Joy: We talked about her parents and sister. I accidentally opened that topic.

Yna: Why? 

Joy: I just wanted to ask her who she ate with.

Yna: It’s okay. I know you already said sorry.

Joy: Of course, that’s a very serious matter.

Joy and Yna finally arrived at the room. Joy go and sit on the bed while Yna gets her medicines.

Joy: I feel sad for her, she blames herself because she feels like her mother and sister are suffering because of her.

Yna gives the medicines to Joy. Joy took all the medicines that Yna gave to her.

Joy: But you know yaya, her eyes are full of sadness. It’s like she’s having a hard time. I want to know her more. (yawns)

Joy falls asleep and so Yna.

After a few minutes, Joy and Yna wakes up.

SHE starts watching her favorite movie. 

Joy: I have to tell this to Rose. We have to watch this together. 

Yna: Be careful, okay?

Joy: I will.

Joy walks towards Rose’s room. 

The LIGHTS are following Joy.

Scene 5

(Rose’s Room) (downstage left)

Joy is about to knock but Estella accidentally left the door open so Joy heard them.

Estella: So when will you die?

Rose is crying.

Estella: Answer me! Our mother is almost dying because of too much work because of you! Almost all her earnings are for you, just for your hospital bills. Why can’t you just die? 

Rose: I’m sorry.

Estella: Everything will be fine if you’ll be gone from our lives. Your supposedly chemotherapy is just a waste of money. I really don’t understand mom. Why does she try her best to save you when we all know that you’ll eventually die? Since you’re a child, you’re always like this. BURDEN!

Rose kneel in front of Estella.

Rose: I’m really sorry. I wish I had died earlier so we wouldn’t be like this now.

Estella: I wish you had just done it. I wish I didn’t have a sister like you so that I could feel how to be cared and loved by a mother. Stop fighting and just give up.

Estella walks out and Joy hides. 

Scene 6

Rose is at the rooftop’s railings. (downstage left)

SHE’S talking to herself while crying.

Rose: I don’t know what to do anymore. What did I do wrong? Why am I like this? Lord, do I deserve this? Am I a bad child to experience this? I am sick and I am a burden to my family. I can’t help or make them happy. I only caused them pain and suffering. Should I just die? Should I do what my sister told me to do? Should I kill myself right now? Everything will be fine if I’ll be gone, right? My mother could stop working too much and enjoy her life without a sick daughter. She could buy the things that she wants for herself, for my sister, and for our house. My sister could live a happy life. She could be my mother’s only daughter. A healthy and beautiful daughter. 

Rose closes her eyes and slowly starts to let go her grip to the railings.

But she stops and grip harder to it.

Rose: But I can’t. I really can’t. I want to die but I can’t. I can’t kill myself. I don’t want to kill myself. I want to fight this illness. I want to survive from this suffering. I want to recover from this. I want to live my life. 

Rose opens her eyes.

Rose: I want to live. 

Another LIGHTS come up on Joy.  (downstage right)

Joy silently walks out from her room to go the hospital’s rooftop. 

She took the elevator.

Joy: (shocked and afraid) Rose, no!

Rose looks at her.

Joy: I know life is hard but you have me. You can talk to me. I can be your friend. You should not feel alone. You should be strong to fight. I am always here by your side as you fight.

Rose: What are you talking about?

Joy: Don’t end your life here. Don’t jump.

Rose: (laughs) Huh? What? I will not jump. I will not end my life.

Joy: Then what are you doing there? Why are you standing at the rooftop’s railing?

Rose: (still laughing) I’m just enjoying and feeling the breeze here. I’ll not kill myself at 10 in the morning.

Joy: Oh my God! You almost give me a heart attack. I thought I’ll be witnessing a suicide. 

Rose went down and sit on a bench while smiling. (downstage center)

Rose: Well, you’re quite right. You almost witness a suicide. It’s not like I’m thinking to kill myself but I’m just wondering if jumping there peacefully can solve everything.

Joy: Of course not! Suicide is not the key.

Rose: But maybe it can be a solution.

Joy: Suicide will never be a solution. Suicide is a choice that a person makes when she’s facing many problems and she can’t find solutions.

Rose: Do you think a person who commits suicide is weak?

Joy: No. I know they fight so hard before they choose that decision. It is not right to end your own life but it is also not right to call them weak when we never experience and feel the things that they experienced and felt.

Rose: You’re right. By the way, what is your illness? Why are you here? You seem okay.

Joy: I have a Cyanotic Congenital Heart Disease. 

Rose: Oh my God! Are you okay?!

Joy: Oh my God too. You surprised me. Why? Why are you shouting.

Rose: Earlier, you said that I almost gave you a heart attack. Are you okay? What do you feel right now? Do you want me to call a doctor?

Joy: (laughs) It’s just an expression. You know, when you are too surprised. I just watched it on television. 

Rose: (sighs) That’s good to know. But what is cyotic… cyanic…

Joy: Cyanotic Congenital Heart Disease?

Rose: Yes. I can’t say it correctly, I’m sorry.

Joy: (laughs) It is a heart defect that is already present at my birth that reduces the amount of oxygen delivered to my body.

Rose: So you’re here for how many years?

Joy: I don’t know. I lost count.

Rose: I’m sorry.

Joy: How about you?

Rose: I have Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia.

Joy: What’s that? 

Rose: It is a disease in which my bone marrow makes too many white blood cells.

Joy: It’s curable right?

Rose: Yes, that’s why mom and sister is working so hard to get me treated. 

Joy: Don’t blame yourself. Just think that your mother and sister is doing that for you because they love you.

Rose: I hope so.

Joy: Just promise me that you’ll not give up okay? Everything will be better soon. Just be strong.

Rose; You’re giving me high hopes.

Joy: That’s really my goal. To give you hope. Anyway, I’m happy to see you laugh earlier. You look more beautiful when you laugh.

Rose: (smiles) But, what if we die tomorrow?

Joy: The future is uncertain, but that can be a good thing. Let’s not conclude what will happen next. But to answer your question, if I’ll die tomorrow, I’ll die happily.

Rose: Why?

Joy: Because I know that I fight and tried to survive until my last breath. So, let’s fight so we can both survive. Okay?

Rose nods.

Joy: Oh my God! What time is it? We have to go back. I think yaya is already worried about me.

Rose: Let’s go.

Scene 7

Yna is walking around while panicking. (stage left)

Dr. Ross: You should calm down. I know nothing happened to Joy. She’s a very strong child.

Yna: (crying) I know. She’s a very strong child that she survives at everything. 

Joy is walking towards them.

Yna hugged Joy tightly.

Yna: Where have you been? Are you okay? Do you feel okay? What do you feel?

Joy: I—I can’t breathe.

Yna: (crying) What?! Help me doctor. Save Joy! 

Joy: Yaya, stop. You’re hugging me tightly that I can’t breathe already. 

Yna immediately let go Joy.

Joy: I’m sorry. I just went to the rooftop.

Yna: I’m so sorry. I am just so worried. I woke up and you’re not sleeping in your bed anymore. I panicked because I thought you tried to…

Dr. Ross: Okay! I hope you both feel okay now.

Scene 8

(Rose’s Room)

The LIGHTS come up on Rose. (center stage)

Rose wakes up.

Yna: Call Dr. Ross. Please! (voice from the downstage right)

Dr. Ross: Ready the equipment, right now! Get the defibrillator!

Rose: What’s that noise?

Rose gets up and walk outside her room. (stage left)

Rose: What’s happening? Why is everyone running?

Yna: JOOOOOYYY! Please, no! Joy, no..

The LIGHTS are slowly turning on. (downstage right)

Rose: J-joy?

Dr. Ross: Time of death, 1:34 pm.

Rose slowly kneels.

Yna: Joy, stop joking around! (laughs while crying) This is one of your silly jokes, right? Wake up already, this is not a good joke. Joy. Joy.

Yna hugs Joy tightly.

Dr. Ross: I’m sorry. We tried everything that we can but now, she didn’t survive.

Yna: No, please, no. She’s a very strong girl, right? She will survive again. Do anything doc, save her again. Please!

Dr. Ross: I’m really sorry.

Dr. Ross walks out the room.

Scene 9

(Hospital’s Chapel) (downstage center)

Rose: Why her?! She deserves everything on this world. She deserves to live. Bring her back to life again, please. I’m begging you. Just take me instead. Please! Can you hear me?

Yna walks inside the chapel.

Yna: You also deserves to live. If Joy would hear you, I bet she’ll say the same. 

Rose: No, if God should choose between us, I deserved to be chosen to die. Joy is very strong. She can survive.

Yna: Yes, she is indeed strong. But, she is also fragile like you. Did you know that she had attempted suicide many times?

Rose: What?

Yna: She tried to kill herself many times but she always survived. Maybe that’s the reason why she chose to fight her illness instead.

Rose: Why? Why did she tried to end her life?

Yna: Joy have a heart disease since her birth. She got it from her mother. Joy would have had a twin back then but after she was born, her mother couldn’t bear to give birth to her twin. She died with the child still in her womb. Ever since, her father only blames Joy until her symptoms appeared and she needs to be in the hospital. Her father only gave her financial help instead of visiting her. That’s why Joy tried to kill herself. She couldn’t stand the guilt because of her father’s blame just like how your sister blames you.

Rose: What?

Yna: I’m sorry. She accidentally heard you talking. She was about to show you her favorite movie but she heard you and your sister talking and here.

Yna gives her an envelope. 

Yna: She wants me to give you this.  

Scene 10

(FLASHBACK) 

Joy walks towards her room. (stage right)

The LIGHTS are following her.

(Joy’s Room) 

Yna: What happened? Did you greet her?

Joy is looking down.

Joy: I understand her.

Yna: Huh? What are you talking about?

Joy: I already understand why her eyes are sad. I finally understand why she blames herself for the things that she didn’t do.

Yna: What happened?

Joy looks at Yna sadly.

Joy: Her sister is blaming her for their mother’s suffering. She is calling her a burden. 

Yna: What?! Are you sure?

Joy: I heard them.

Yna: Did Rose knew that you heard them?

Joy: No, I wanted to hug her earlier but I stopped myself. I think she don’t want anyone to know what she’s going through. I think she wants everyone to believe what her sister made her to believe, that’s everything is her fault even though it wasn’t. She didn’t deserve that. It’s not her fault.

Yna: Yes, it’s not her fault. Why did her sister said such things to her? She’s a bad sister.

Joy: I think we shouldn’t judge her base on what I heard. I am certain of what I had heard but not of what she felt. I didn’t know what her sister is going through to say such painful words to her sister. It is not right but I’m sure there’s a reason.

Yna: My bad, I judged her already as a bad sister. But still, there’s no valid reason to blame Rose.

Joy: There’s no valid reason but there’s still a reason. I want to help them.

Yna: How? They didn’t even know that you heard their conversation.

Joy: When I die..

Yna: Oh, Joy, stop. Please. I don’t want to hear that phrase.

Joy: Just listen to me yaya.

Joy holds Yna’s hand.

Joy: When I die, I want you to tell my Step Mom and Dad that my only request from them is to give financial support to Rose and her family. They are good at supporting financially, right? They must do it, okay?

Yna is crying.

Joy wipes Yna’s tears.

Joy: (laughs) Why are you crying? It’s just an ‘if”. You know, incase. 

Scene 11

(Hospital Mortuary) (downstage center)

Rose: I have watched All the Bright Places, a movie, that says “You save my life. Why couldn’t I save yours?” That’s what I feel right now. You saved me from everything but I couldn’t even save you once. You’re really such a good friend. And you’re a strong girl. I didn’t know that behind your beautiful and sweet smile, there’s a pain hiding in your chest.  You told me before that we’ll fight and survive but you already fought so hard Joy, you already survived. You may be dead already right now but you lived. You became the light in my dark life. You left me with hope and I want to thank you for that. 

Yna enters the room.

Yna: We have to go now Rose.

Rose: Don’t worry, I’ll do everything to fight and survive. I’ll do what I told you. Thank you for the money that you left for my chemotherapy. I’ll see you on the other side. 

All LIGHTS turned off.
